Pre and Lower School Newsletter
March 2010
From Katie Signer and Gina Hurd:
We cannot look ahead to March without acknowledging the hard work and creativity of many parent volunteers in February. Thanks to Jane Sprung, Doreen Griffin, and a wonderful collection of parents, BINGO Night was a resounding success and our Lower School boys are thrilled to have won an extra Pajama Civies Day. Along with more parent volunteers, Chrissy von Oiste and Alex Bergstein should also be commended for coordinating a fabulous Skate Party. It was a huge hit and enjoyed by all who could come. Thank you.
We were so thrilled to see the commitment of our Pre and Lower School boys during the Green Cup Challenge. They were more than happy to turn down lights, conserve water and recycle paper. They are the champions of the cause and their enthusiasm is contagious. We will continue our focus on protecting the planet in the Lower School as the Green Bruins kick off our second annual Catalog Canceling Drive. Families will be asked to cancel any unwanted catalogs (stay tuned for details on how) and our boys will learn the exponential effect this can have on our earth.
On the heels of an incredible school-wide effort to send food and aid to Haiti, our boys have become increasingly aware of the needs of others. We will continue to promote a respect for all that we are fortunate to have and, in turn, how we can help others. With that in mind, Lower School boys will pay particular attention to food waste in our cafeteria. The boys will be encouraged to select healthy choices and portions at lunch and we hope to significantly cut down what is being thrown away. Our fourth grade scientists will also track the environmental impact that food waste can have on our planet.

First Grade Mammal Exhibits: First Graders are excited to share their study of mammals with parents on Wednesday, March 3 from 8:30 to 9:15am. Come enjoy the culmination of this interdisciplinary project and celebrate their learning and growth as students.
Kindergarten Space Expo: Kindergarten parents are invited to come and explore the solar system with the Kindergarten astronauts on Wednesday, March 3 from 1-2:30pm. The boys will be excited to share all that they have learned from their study of the planets.
Spring Encore: Our Spring Encore term begins on March 22, upon return from Spring Break. If you have any questions regarding sign-ups or offerings, be sure to contact one of our Encore Coordinators, Alex Lopez or Ellen Sargent.
Fourth Graders visit Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: To supplement their study of early American history, the fourth graders will take a trip to Philadelphia at the end of the month. On Thursday, March 25 at 7:00am they will depart with their teachers and dad chaperones for an overnight trip. A visit to Independence Hall, the Franklin Institute and a Philadelphia Flyers game are just a few of the of the highlights of this exciting trip. The boys will return on Friday, March 26 at 5:00pm, knowing a great deal more about our country’s history and ready for a restful weekend.
Lower School Uniform Reminder: While it is hard to imagine, the longer days of spring are on the horizon. Many of our Lower School boys will be thrilled to learn they are once again allowed to wear khaki shorts after Spring Break. They should continue to wear a belt and bring a brown sweater to school each day as well.
Getting “snowed in” earlier in February offered families a moment to pause, and the upcoming Spring Break can offer us the same luxury. Looking ahead, we encourage our families to do that which seems so precious and limited at times: spend quality time together. Take the time to play a board game as a family, or simply take a walk. Sit for an extra minute at the dinner table. We encourage you to turn off the television and read by example, to take a trip to the library and read together as a family. Before we know it, our schedules will once again be packed with schoolwork and extra-curriculars and we will be wondering why we forgot to rest. Take time and treasure it. Your boys will, too.
