Science

The goal of the Lower School Science Program is to not only expose students to interesting and engaging science content, but also foster habits of mind integral to scientific thinking. Skills that are reinforced include: observing, using patterns in information for predicting and inferring, and drawing conclusions. Students are asked to record information and raise questions. They are encouraged to plan and predict. Using an inquiry-based approach, Lower School students participate in explorations across life, earth, and physical sciences. They learn about the scientific method, ask questions, wonder, and think critically.

In an age-appropriate fashion, Science is integrated into the first and second grade curriculum and taught by the homeroom teacher. In this way Science takes on an interdisciplinary nature, supporting those skills the boys are learning in other areas of the curriculum. Students also visit the Science Lab to conduct experiments and engage in hands-on activities.

In third and fourth grade, students participate in a Science Collaborative. Through a rotation of five-week explorations, students learn not only from their homeroom teacher but ultimately from the other grade level teachers as well.  When possible, units of study and science concepts coordinate with the broader curriculum. In addition to already existing units, we are pleased to introduce new physics, chemistry and “green” science components as well.

The science curriculum is also augmented by occasional assemblies such as a visit by a General Motors engineer who brought a hydrogen fuel cell car.  Read about that assembly here.
