Brunswick School - Greenwich, CT

History

1902 - "The advantages of a good boarding school... with the advantages of living at home." With this simple philosophy George E. Carmichael opened his college preparatory school with 14 boys in two rooms of the Octagon House on Milbank Avenue.

1906 - Brunswick builds a new school and gymnasium on Maher Avenue.

1921 - Lower School building is added to the Maher Avenue campus.

1928 - Enrollment increases to 234 boys.

1933 - Thomas Burton becomes the second Headmaster, instituting the advisory system in the Upper School and opening a Pre-School.

1934 - Upper School building is rebuilt after being destroyed by fire in June, 1933.

1938 - William Henry is appointed third Headmaster.

1943 - School enrollment dips to 95 students seriously threatening Brunswick's future.

1944 - Alfred E. Everett is named fourth headmaster. Brunswick receives anonymous gift of $10,000 to keep the school open.

1946 - Enrollment increases to 200 boys and four classrooms are added to the Lower School.

1949 - Building project begins adding new library and an arts wing.

1950 - School becomes debt free.

1954 - Upper School tuition is $750.

1958 - Enrollment expands to 395 students.

1962 - Brunswick acquires field house and fields on Ridgeview Avenue from Greenwich Academy to be used for Pre-School and Upper School sports.

1965 - New Middle School building constructed and endowment fund started with $150,000.

1969 - Norman A. Pedersen becomes Headmaster.

1970 - Growth continues with the purchase of the Maple Avenue campus and the construction of a new Lower School attached to Century Hall, former home of Greenwich Academy. Enrollment reaches 500 students.

1970's - Academic coordination commences with Greenwich Academy. New Upper School library/classroom building, gymnasium and science center are added.

1988 - Duncan Edwards III '70 becomes sixth Headmaster.

1990 - School endowment reaches $800,000.

1991 - A second floor is added to the Lower School and the building is renovated.

1998 - Brunswick acquires 104 acres of property on King Street.

2000 - Edwards Campus opens on King Street with a new Middle School, ice rink, gymnasium, squash courts, tennis courts and playing fields.

2001 - Thomas W. Philip becomes the seventh Headmaster after 12 years at Brunswick teaching history, coaching, serving as head of the Middle School and then the Upper School.

2002 - Brunswick celebrates its Centennial.

2003 - Brunswick student body reaches 845 boys, with 143 faculty, a full college preparatory curriculum including AP courses in 26 different subjects and an endowment over $60 million.

2004 - The King Street campus expands to include a new Lower School, field house, stadium and 10 faculty houses. The Pre-School moves onto the Pettengill campus on Maple Avenue.

2007 - Renovations begin on the Maher Avenue campus to be completed Fall 2008.  A new arts center including a theater with back stage production space,  new music and art classrooms, a new library and student center are all part of this phase of construction.
