Classics

The Latin I intensive course can be taken in any year. Second year Latin is divided into two sections, II and IIA. The students in IIA are those who benefit from a faster pace and more concentrated emphasis on translation skills. The same division applies to third year Latin where the choices are Latin III or Latin IIIA.

Following the graduation requirement of three years of Latin, the student has a choice of taking Latin IV, in which Classical Latin texts of both prose and poetry are read and analyzed, or AP Latin, an intensive course which prepares the student for the AP examination. The AP course offered alternates every other year between Virgil and Lyric Catullus/Ovid. For those students who have completed the AP courses by their senior year and wish to pursue further Latin studies, a Seminar course is available. The topic for the Seminar varies according to the teachers' and students' interests.

Classical Greek is taught through level II with level III as a tutorial.

Students are encouraged to take the SAT II examination in Latin upon completion of Latin IV.

A highlight of the Classics program is the Latin Carol Service which gives students the opportunity to read Latin in a public speaking setting.  Click here to read about the 2007 Latin Carol Service.
