BPA Newsletter

                                                               May/June 2008

This year’s Fundance Film Festival proved to be the most successful to date. Many terrific films were viewed, all giving our boys and girls glimpses into lives in various countries and different cultures around the world. Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped pull this together … the refreshments, decorations, pizza party coordinators, event coordinators and program committee members who worked together to present a quality film festival to the Brunswick/GA community. We are so fortunate to have people like Priscilla Masselink and Jessie Jamar leading the way… many thanks for your commitment in organizing Fundance ‘08!

It’s hard to believe the school year is coming to a close. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the incoming Brunswick Parents Association Board ‘08-’09. With Suzy Breck as President, you are in excellent hands! It has been an honor for me to have served on the Board this year, and I am most grateful for the opportunity to have worked with all the committed ‘07-‘08 Board members. I am truly thankful for the insight and assistance of each and every one of you, and feel lucky to have formed such good friendships in the process. I wish you all a healthy and relaxing summer filled with friends and family alike.

~ Terri DeSalvo, President

UPPER SCHOOL SPRING PLAY
Please come to the Upper School spring play, a comedy entitled Laughing Stock, by Charles Morey. It’s a loving look at a summer in a rural barn playhouse, with a very small budget, in which the actors have to learn three plays in repertory. According to the author, it is a “place where there was never enough of anything: time, money, and sometimes simply not enough talent or skill; where sometimes the doors fell off their hinges, the sound cues ran backwards and the occasional entrance was missed - but where you gave yourself over wholly to the making of plays, to telling stories in the dark on a summer night …” This production is appropriate for Middle School students and above.

The Black Box Theater in the GA Performing Arts Center, Thursday, May 1st and Friday, 2nd at 7:00pm.
Reserve your tickets at Boxoffice@greenwichacademy.org .

FUNDANCE FOREIGN FESTIVAL A GREAT SUCCESS!
Close to a thousand people attended this year’s film festival, enjoying the free films (and free food)! The Saturday night screening of “The Kite Runner” brought the largest audience of the weekend, followed by the very popular Student Film Competition. The films get better and better every year, and the bar was raised by accepting entries from area schools. This year’s winners were:
> Middle School Jury Award: Carley Petrone from GA for “The New Style”
> Middle School Audience Award: Will Peisch from Brunswick for “The Simple Chase”
> Upper School Jury Award: Jake Orthwien from GCDS for “Dig Two Graves”
> Upper School Audience Award: Diana Snyder from GA for “One Fine Date”
> Documentary Award: Gus Ruchman from Brunswick US for “Par for the Course”
> Honorable Mention in Animation: Ray Tierney from Brunswick MS for “Magic”

The Friday afternoon pizza parties and film screenings for both the Lower and Middle Schools were also very popular. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make this happen, and a large round of applause to all who worked hard to make this year’s Fundance the best so far. We’ll see you all next year back on February 6-8 in Brunswick’s new Performing Art Center!

BEAR HUGS
THANK YOU to all Bear Hugs volunteers. This year, hundreds of meals were delivered, numerous playdates were arranged, and many flowers and gifts were donated to holiday gift baskets presented to families in our community.

Every request for help that was sent out was immediately filled by our wonderful volunteers. In addition, this year we were fortunate to work with “GA Cares,” headed by Susan Carmichael, allowing for coordination between our two schools in helping families in need.

Words cannot express our true appreciation for the kindness and support that the Brunswick community gives to our families. Your help was invaluable and the BPA thanks everyone for the continuous support of Bear Hugs.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
The Middle School Friday Afternoon Community Service Program again extends a THANK YOU to all those at the Middle School who made this program possible and to the parents who volunteered to drive. We deeply appreciate your generosity and support!                                ~ Maureen Carroll and Beverly Floersheimer
