The Pre and Lower School science program is based on a scientific inquiry approach. In addition to learning valuable skills and acquiring knowledge, students are encouraged to use critical thinking and scientific reasoning to enrich their understanding of science. The curriculum is organized so that each grade level studies aspects of physical science, earth science, and life science - encouraging students to build each year on previous experiences.
In the earliest grades students begin with simple experimentation and observations. Second graders investigate, among other topics, anatomy, solids and liquids, secret formulas, and vertebrates. The third grade explores electricity and magnets, invertebrates, and archaeology. In the fourth grade, students focus on geology and the structure of the earth, chemistry, and motion and design. Each grade level revisits and reinforces unifying concepts and skills, with increasing sophistication each year.
