History/Social Studies
The Pre and Lower School History/Social Studies Program seeks to broaden the child's awareness and knowledge of the world in which he lives. In a developmentally appropriate fashion, as their understanding of themselves and others grows, they are introduced to an ever-expanding world. Starting locally and reaching beyond, Lower Schoolers learn valuable skills such as identifying and examining problems, formulating opinions, and making decisions.
In Pre-Kindergarten through Second Grade students learn about their community and towns around them and the contributions of their relatives and ancestors. They learn about important people in history and are introduced to cultural traditions and holidays around the world and amongst themselves. In grades three and four, students are introduced to current events, learn geography and begin to study early American history, culminating with a Fourth Grade "Colonial Day," a time-honored Brunswick role-playing tradition and rite of passage.
Our Social Studies Program is enhanced by related field trips, assemblies and a Mini Term experiential learning program focused on diversity and multicultural studies. This mini-term is usually in the form of a hands-on multi-day workshop. In addition to these engaging activities, students benefit from Brunswick's strong commitment to service learning throughout their Pre and Lower School years.
