Modern Language
Students choose French, Spanish or Chinese when they enter the fifth grade. The goal of the four-year sequence is to introduce the elements of a Level I course and build the students' confidence in speaking and listening skills. The teaching of grammar is concurrent with the aural-oral activities and promotes both reading and writing as refined tools for self-expression and communication. In addition, the Middle School language programs introduce the students to the broader cultural environments of French and Spanish speaking countries.
Upon successful completion of the four-year sequence in the Middle School, the student's performance in the eighth grade determines his placement in a regular or honors section in the Upper School.
