College Guidance Office Policies
I. Letters of Recommendation
The school letters of recommendation are written jointly by the college office in concert with the senior advisor. In addition, school recommendations are also written by selected senior advisors. The college office edits all outgoing recommendations. They are compiled from the academic folder and the information gathered by the college office, including the Student Information Questionnaire and Parent Questionnaire. School letters are not released to parents or students as they are considered a confidential communication between this school and the colleges.
Letters of recommendation written by teachers are not reviewed or read by the counselors. These are considered confidential communication between the teacher and the college admission office.
II. College Campus Visits
When a student wishes to visit a college campus when that college is in session, he often must miss a day of school. In this situation, the student MUST fill out a College Visitation Form. The student is to take this form to all teachers a day or two before he is scheduled to be absent. The teachers fill it out, and the student then returns the form to the College Guidance Office. Failure to properly fill out this form will be considered an unexcused absence from school.
III. Test Scores
Brunswick School puts all available SAT Reasoning and AP scores of 3 or better on the transcript. We do not list PSAT OR SAT Subject scores. We also list the TOEFL, if applicable. This listing of scores is for the convenience of the college admissions office. It does not constitute the required official score reports which must be sent from ETS (Educational Testing Service) to each college. Sending official scores is the student's responsibility.
IV. Disciplinary Procedures
Many college applications now ask the student and the counselor whether the applicant has ever been suspended or taken a leave from the school. If the student or we are asked specifically, all will respond truthfully. If we are not asked to answer specific questions about disciplinary infractions, we will adhere to our own reporting policy. Brunswick School's policy is that we report to colleges disciplinary actions that fall into one of two categories:
1. Any long term separations from school (two weeks or more) which occur at any time during the student's Brunswick career (whether disciplinary in nature or not).
2. Any suspensions from school which occur during the Junior or Senior year.
If a student's situation changes at any time during the senior year, the colleges will be notified.
