October 2008
From Katie Signer:
September came and went quickly and was filled with numerous opportunities to welcome our new families and to connect as a community. Attendance at our class coffees and Annual Dinner was excellent and the volunteer participation throughout the month and during the Bear Fair underlined yet again how invested our parents are in our school. Special thanks go to Bear Fair Co-chairs, Jill Coyle and Keri Stroemer, for coordinating a wonderful event for not only our boys and families but Brunswick alumni as well.
In addition to the regularly scheduled events of October, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to welcome the Abantu Mu Buntu Children’s Music Troupe from Uganda, Africa. This troupe of singers and performers will be hosted by Brunswick families during their time here and our Lower School boys will enjoy an assembly and time to visit with them. Ms. Wamunyu, our Pre and Lower School music teacher, will be working with the boys to learn a song they can perform together. It will be a wonderful chance to learn about life in East Africa and connect our two cultures through music and dance.

Lower School Curriculum Night will take place on Wednesday, October 15th at 7:00pm. Parents will gather in the Lower School gym for welcoming remarks and then you will be invited to your son’s classroom where you will hear specifics about the grade level curriculum and expectations. Please note that the teachers of special subjects and our special needs team look forward to meeting you and will be available to chat after classroom visits. Sign-ups for Parent Teacher Conferences will be posted at this time so we encourage you to bring your calendar as well.
Pre and Lower School Conferences are scheduled for Friday, October 31st. Please be reminded that there will be no school for boys on that day, as teachers will be meeting with parents. Our conferences are designed to offer teachers an opportunity to share your son’s strengths and communicate goals for growth. If you have any questions or areas of concern you would like to discuss, please be sure to communicate those in advance so as to make the best use of the time you have.
Even though your boys will be home on Halloween day, we have set aside Thursday, October 30th for a Civies Day and Halloween Parade. Boys may dress in casual attire during the day and in the afternoon, just prior to the parade, they will take time to change into their costumes. As in previous years, we are asking that all costume accessories such as swords, knives, etc. please stay at home. Boys and teachers will parade around the Green and will return to the Lower School playground for a cider and donut party.
From Gina Hurd:
The cooler days of fall have arrived and it is hard to believe that our youngest Bruins have only been in school for just over a month. They have adapted so well to their new routines and procedures. Thank you to our new and returning parents for attending the Class Coffees and the many other events that took place at the beginning of the year. Hopefully everybody is feeling “settled in” both at school and at home.
October promises to bring us spooky happenings at the Pre School. We will celebrate Halloween on Thursday, October 30th. The boys are asked to bring their costumes to school labeled in a bag on that day. Pre-Kindergarten will have a party in each of their classrooms from 1:00-1:45pm. Our Kindergarten boys will have a joint Halloween party in the PS gym and on the playground from 12:45-1:55pm. The festivities will continue as the Pre School boys and their teachers parade through the Upper School and around the block. We welcome parents to join us (in costume of course!)
Friday, October 31st is Conference Day. There is no school for Pre and Lower School boys on that day. Our Pre School teachers look forward to meeting with each of you and discussing your son’s progress thus far this semester. We ask that you make every effort to arrive on time for your conference. In the event that you need to make a change, please contact your son’s teachers.
