English
Building on the basic skills acquired in the Lower School, the Brunswick Middle School English curriculum develops and refines these skills in preparation for the Upper School. In its role as a bridge, the curriculum is committed to a grounding in grammatical skills, writing facility, and the critical reading of literature.

The Middle School English curriculum examines human values through the study of traditional literary classics. It is hoped that a boy becomes able to appreciate not only the story's plot, but also the language and style the author chose for his medium, enabling an interpretive and critical response.
Grammar is taught as a four-year sequential course. The student should develop a keen understanding of the fundamental aspects of his language, which will eventually lead to clear and original writing, a fundamental goal of the English program.
Each Middle School student is required to produce one piece of interpretive, creative or analytical writing each week. Boys are encouraged to revise and edit their work as they strive for logical, fluent, terse, and focused insights.
