Ceramics and Sculpture
If you have always wanted to build large sculpture or wanted to make sculpture towards an AP course then this is for you. In this course, students will work on all kinds of sculpture techniques. Hardware supplies, wood, clay, plaster, wire mesh and raffia may be among the materials used to create innovative works of art. Students will explore the use of light, space, depth, function, form and mass in sculpture. You will have opportunities for both wild expression and considered precision.
Instructor: Andrew Hall
Andrew Hall is a preeminent local artist who has exhibited his unique style in galleries from England to the United States. He has been teaching at Brunswick for eleven years, where he is Chair of the Arts. Under his leadership, his department has gained national recognition as one of the best secondary school art programs in America. His sculpture course at Brunswick is very popular and has been featured in the AP curriculum guide. Andrew has been a working freelance artist for twenty five years making a variety of organic sculptures made from metal, wood and clay. His magnetic teaching style and second-to-none abilities make him a true Brunswick masterpiece.
Action and Acting
Wild summer energy will find a home on the King Street stage. Actors will play theater games and explore exciting characters and outrageous stories. Instructor Seth Potter will lead students in finding their creativity and imagination, which they will learn to pair with physical movement. A crazy, fun, thrilling time will be had by all!
Instructor: Seth Potter
Seth Potter is currently the acting teacher at Brunswick School and also teaches a senior English section on Shakespeare. He has worked as a professional actor and theater technician. He has his Masters in Theater and English from Middlebury College. He has taught theater to students from kindergarten through graduate school over the past twelve years, working in NJ, TN, CA, NY and CT. For several summers he has worked with summer acting programs for middle school students, developing characters and stories for the stage.
Summer Jams Music
Start with a meaty melody, squeeze on some jazz, spread the funk, let the blues ooze, and rock and roll that patty onto a bun of fun and you’ve got the tastiest summer music program in town! Just wait ‘til the neighbors catch a whiff of this cookout! Led by Upper School music teacher Shane Kirsch, this is a session not to be missed. Students will have the opportunity to unleash their creative energy in a nurturing musical environment that caters to the individual as well as the group. Focus will be on the elements of various music styles, song forms, improvisation, basic music theory fundamentals, original composition, and repertoire. The session will end with a collective concert given by the students. From the aspiring novice to the seasoned player, this workshop will promise musical success across the board!
Instructor: Shane Kirsch
Saxophonist/songwriter/producer, has a BFA in Jazz Studies from Purchase College and an MAT in music education from Manhattanville College. Shane is currently a full-time music teacher at Brunswick where he directs various ensembles and teaches classes in digital audio. He has been called upon to enhance the performances of several popular groups/artists such as: The B-52's, Goo Goo Dolls, The Urge, and many more. Shane has also recorded for Mercury Records, appears on Disney's national release "Meet the Deedles" soundtrack, Orange Factory Records and Kult Records, just to name a few. His energetic style and passion for music will make this an experience to remember.
Drawing and Painting
This accelerated studio course will offer students a chance to practice and experiment with different techniques and skills involved with drawing and painting large scale compositions. Through observation of “still life”, the use of digital images, and various transfer techniques, the students will explore many ways to recreate the images surrounding our daily lives. The aim of this course is to hone the technical drawing and painting skills of the students, but also to encourage exploration of the media, properties of perspective and scale, as well as color theory.
Instructor: Brian Shepard
Local artist Brian Shepard has been teaching at Brunswick School for 3 years. After graduating from Brunswick in 1997, Brian went on to Amherst College where he majored in Fine Arts. He currently teaches Foundation Art, Advanced Studio Art, and Advanced Ceramics in the Upper School. Brian is well-know at Brunswick as being one of the most approachable and fun-loving teachers and his ability to relate to young people always keeps him on top of his game. If you’re interested in art, this is a wonderful way to get “drawn” into it!
