Brunswick School - Courage, Honor, Truth

Science

In the Upper School curriculum, students begin with a study of the basic sciences through scientific inquiry. Three years of science is required; courses may be taken at either Brunswick School or Greenwich Academy through a coordinated program. A typical core sequence in either the honors or regular track includes biology in the ninth grade (offered at both campuses), chemistry in the tenth grade (offered at Greenwich Academy), and physics in the eleventh grade (offered at Brunswick School). Most seniors supplement their scientific studies by taking AP courses in biology, environmental science, chemistry, and physics. College level courses are offered in advanced sciences in Organic Chemistry, Human Physiology, Animal Behavior, Biochemistry and Conservation Biology.  Elective courses in fields such as oceanography, geology, environmental science and astronomy are also offered. Independent student research is encouraged with the help of faculty mentors. By the time they graduate, students have mastered many elements of scientific inquiry, including designing and conducting experiments, thinking critically about the relationships between evidence and explanations, and communicating scientific arguments.
