Brunswick School - Courage, Honor, Truth

Overview

Brunswick's Upper School students are encouraged to strive for academic excellence, personal growth and maturity. A wide variety of courses are offered at various levels including 33 Advanced Placement courses and a renowned language program that includes Arabic, Mandarin, French, Italian, Latin and Spanish. Our dedicated and caring faculty and 1:5 teacher/student ratio challenge each boy to learn and succeed to fulfill his unique potential.

In addition to a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, the Upper School focuses on promoting the personal responsibility and self-discipline that enables students to thrive at the university level. A diversified choice of extracurricular activities provides every boy with the opportunity to broaden his experience beyond the classroom. Students all take part in Brunswick's rigorous athletic program and participate in a wide range of extra-curricular activities, including student government, community service, the literary magazine, dramatic and musical productions and music groups.

The Faculty Advisor System

The faculty advisor system at Brunswick is a major factor in the school life of every boy. All students are carefully matched with an experienced faculty advisor for the academic year. As important as is the advisor's responsibility to chronicle academic progress and to serve as liaison between school and parent, it is the advisor's role as friend and advocate that is most important. Through mutual respect and personal regard for the advisor/student relationship, Brunswick's teachers model values and help develop each boy's confidence in ways that will serve him throughout his life. In addition to the support and guidance of his faculty advisor, personalized college placement counseling begins in the junior year. Brunswick is proud of its college admissions history, and the record the School's graduates have achieved at university level and beyond.

Coordination with Greenwich Academy

Greenwich Academy and Brunswick School are committed to a coordinated Upper School program. While remaining two distinct institutions in philosophy and culture, GA and Brunswick are dedicated to common educational goals. The unique aspect of this coordination is that it creates an entity that is neither single-sex nor co-educational. Over three decades, the program has evolved into a teaching and learning community whose whole is better than the sum of its parts. The schools retain their own traditions, student governments, athletic programs, publications, Boards of Trustees and alumni/alumnae associations. All academic classes except mathematics and freshman English are co-educational. Most, if not all, students have classes on both campuses and occasionally faculty teach classes on the other school's campus. In certain cases courses are taught on only one campus, such as many of the sciences and advanced placement level courses. Performance opportunities are co-educational. The coordinated Upper School of approximately 600 students is big enough to provide a variety of activities and small enough to inspire a sense of belonging. Students enjoy co-educational extra-curricular and social activities. Students attend one another's games, read one another's newspapers and participate in joint field trips, clubs, musical groups and dramatic productions. This full range of coordinated classes and activities fosters camaraderie and mutual respect.
