Brunswick School - Courage, Honor, Truth

Science

The earth, living organisms, chemical reactions, motion, these are just some of the complex phenomena that challenge the scientific inquiry skills of our Middle School students. At this level we emphasize hands-on learning through experiments and projects, guiding students toward a strong conceptual understanding.

In the fifth grade, students are formally introduced to the scientific method: how to develop hypotheses and then test them. Modeling, building, and testing projects are daily staple features of the fifth grade curriculum.

In the sixth grade the concentration is upon earth science with extended units of study in mapping, geology, plate tectonics, meteorology, and basic chemistry.

The seventh grade year is life science, or biology, concentrating upon such topics as the 'unseen' microbiological world around us, nutrition, botany, and a thorough study of the human body's systems.

The eighth grade prepares students for the transition to the Upper School. The program teaches the basic principles of atomic structure, chemistry, and physics, with an emphasis upon laboratory experimentation and independent experimental design.

The Brunswick Middle School Science Department is proud to now host two science fairs each year: one for the fifth and sixth grades exhibiting team projects; and, then another fair for the seventh and eighth grades where students develop projects individually.
